Product Guide to Facial Treatment: Acne Prevention and Treatment |
|
Cleansing: Acne prevention begins with proper hygeine. But one must be careful not to use harsh cleansers that leave the skin dry, tight and unprotected. Chemical laden cleansers, pore clogging concealers and makeup can disrupt the skin’s ability to breathe and shed spent cells. Through proper hygeine and gentle cleansing, the best treatment for acne begins before pimples ever appears. Oil Reduction: All skin secretes sebum (oil), which provides a protective shield but over-active sebaceous glands cause an abundance of surface oil. To prevent pimples, it's important to try and maintain the skin's healthy balance of oil production using non-drying, alcohol free toners. Spot Treatment: It may not always be possible to prevent an acne outbreak. When it does happen, it's important to restrain yourself from "popping" the pimples and making it worse. Instead, a patient hand, coupled with a natural spot treatment is a more effective remedy. Exfoliation and Cell Renewal: Even the best attempts to prevent acne can result in hyperpigmentation and acne scars. If this happens, it is possible to shed the top layers of the skin's surface through physical exfoliation (microdermabrasion). This rids the skin of darkened and damaged cells, revealing new, unblemished skin beneath. Microdermabrasion uses physical exfoliants such as aluminum oxide crystals, crushed seeds and/or powdered shells to slough of dead cells. Due to the risk of skin tearing, this method is best suited for those who do not have any pimples or blemishes that are raised above the skin's surface. For those with raised acne, alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) chemical peels are a better option.
